Description
Indian Mound Cottage rises skyward in Jekyll Island's Historic Historic District. Gordon McKay of Massachusetts built the cottage in 1892, naming it for a mound on the lawn thought to have been a burial site of the Guale Indians. In reality, the mound is a shell midden. William Rockefeller purchased Indian Mound Cottage in 1905. The structure remained in the Rockefeller family until 1947, at which time the state of Georgia acquired Jekyll Island and turned the island into a state park.
