Description
Cape Disappointment State Park on the Washington state side of the mouth of the Columbia River is part of the Cape Disappointment Historic District. Here Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery first glimpsed the Pacific Ocean on November 15, 1805. Later, the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse was built in 1856 overlooking the "the graveyard of the Pacific," a dangerous river bar. This is the oldest functioning lighthouse on the West Coast. This photo features part of the collection of the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center (which does feature post-Lewis and Clark lighthouse and seafaring items).
