Description
Established in 1862 on St.Helena Island near Beaufort, SC, the Penn School was the first educational institution in the South specifically devoted to the education of African Americans. During the Civil Rights era Civil Rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr., retreated to the former school grounds to reflect and write. Now known as the Penn Center, the property features a museum and retreat center, and is a key part of the Reconstruction Era National Park. Pictured is the a boat dock adjacent to a Retreat House that was constructed for Martin Luther King Jr.'s use just prior to his assassination.
